Beware the Fashion Police

Okay, I meant to do this post yesterday but read about P. Diddy’s Deal with the vodka company and you know Mr. Combs always comes first, but I’m all over it today. Can somebody answer me this? What the fuck is up with all the controversy about sagging pants? I mean, who cares? Apparently everybody. I am shocked! Are States really attempting to pass legislation regarding the way kids wear their pants? Hell, I say kids, but there are grown ass men rocking “the sag”. (The Sag…You like that? I just made that up.)

I did a little research on sagging pants, not much because I could really give a damn about the stupidity of this controversy, when we have so many other, more pressing, issues going on this world to worry about, other than if a young man wants us to see his underwear as he rocks his jeans around his ass cheeks. Anyway, the Urban Dictionary defines “sagging” as; wearing ones pants around the hips so that they sag down and bunch up around the ankles. Originally, this was a prison thing that signified that you were another prisoner's property, i.e. bitch. Punks were forced to wear their pants this way so it would be easier for their masters to pull their pants down and butt-fuck them. (I didn’t say it. This came directly from the Urban Dictionary. Honest).
Now to be honest, I’m not so sure I believe the part about it being a sign, in prison, showing that you are somebody’s bitch. I think somebody just made that shit up just to discourage young folks from wearing their jeans like that. Now, I will admit that I only go to prison to drop people off, so I don’t know for sure. I will say, however, that I do remember watching “Scared straight” growing up and I thought they made mention to something else that let one prisoner know that another prisoner was his booty pal. (LOL. I said, “Booty pal”. I crack myself up.) Hell, they use to say the same thing about a man that wore an earring in his ear and we see how well that worked out.

At any rate, my question still remains; who the fuck cares? I don’t know why it bothers people so much. I’ll tell you right now, I don’t understand the trend, but I have not gotten so old and hypocritical that I want to censor the way a person chooses to dress. Hell, the way I see it is that if the parents don’t care how their child dresses when they leave the house then why should I? (Hell, as a cop, I want them to sag. That way I can see that they don’t have a gun tucked away in their waist band and it makes it harder for them to run.) I know some of you are thinking; well the parents don’t know that they are sagging. I say the hell they don’t. The parents are buying the pants, in most cases. You tell me what mother don’t know their son’s waist size. My mom was keeping up with mine up until I was twenty-one years old, damn it.
It amazes me how as we get older, how cynical we allow ourselves to become and how quick we are to for get the little fashion trends that drove our parents crazy. Why is that? Let these young people be who they are. Who is it hurting? Now I can see if it becomes a gang thing, that’s a whole different issue, but we all know that in most cases sagging as little to nothing to do with gangs. It’ just that people’s sensibilities are all offended by seeing young men’s boxer shorts. Boxer shorts, people! Think about it, these kids take into consideration that their underwear will be showing so they take the time out to put on boxer shorts, the least offensive underwear there is. I could understand if they were rocking tighty-whities, with skid marks, but these kids intentions are not to offend. Why we hating? And Lawd knows I love to hate on the stupidity of my people, but this is not worth hating on. That’s why I am writing this post to hate on the haters of sagging. Let it go, people, damn! It ain’t that serious.

Ha, You're Hilarious!

I can remember a few years back there was trend for girls (mostly college girls)to wearing boxers as shorts. Nobody seemed to care about that. Certainly nobody was talking about laws to stop it.

I guess it comes down to the situation. If the person sporting "the sag" is hanging with his buddies, no problem but if he's going for a job interview that's a big strike against him. Either way it shouldn't be a criminal offense, that 's ridiculous.

you said it...give a fuck if you want to sag...will i talk to you on the street if you are?...probably not...but that's your perogative...shit, i wear tight-looks-like-you-painted-those-on low rise jeans and dare someone to tell me something...making it criminal allows for the imprisonment of even more black males...and that's the most important thing; increasing the number of black males in prison...not decreasing the hunger and homelessness or unemployment rate...great post...

lol...caught with my pants down?..lol..Is that the appropriate term here? It's funny cuz I'm party guilty of pulling that one off...I see that some ppl get really annoyed by it but again to me its not that serious and really depends on the situation you're wearing it in...you wont sag your a pair of slacks but shoving on a pair of jeans to run to the city is another story I could let it slide. The funny thing is it's not only old ppl that get offended but some of my friends who are my age do..gay ppl an all..lol..we'll what can I say my boi likes it so I'm happy...I've seen a lot worse..lol

It's stupid, but let the young kids do them. Like you said, it's hurting no one. The state of georgia was looking to enact legislation for this. They need to back the f off. They need to habe more concern for balancing their books or settling that drought situation down there.

Each generation does something that upsets the sensibility of the older generation. The old folks just have to deal with it. These are teens and young men. How can there parents control their appearance. Not gonna happen. I'm apart of the "sagging" generation, but I refuse to do it. It's the dumbest look!
But that's just this man's opinion! lol

You said a mouthful then.

Man, I watched Malcolm X last night (Spike Lee joint) and compared to the struggles then and even now, I don't see why legislation, or anyone else, could give a sh*t about how people wear their pants.

That's just being weak.

I have to say that I can't stand to see those damn droopy ass pants with the seat hanging sometimes as low as the dude's knees...for the luv of GOD why is THAT necessary?!!

In spite of that, I still think passing a law to make saggy pants illegal is a waste of resources...GA definitely needs to focus on that drought problem though.

a sad fashion trend...but legislation against it is a waste of tax payers dollars on the real.

good post dude!

I hate saggers! A former federal prison guard I know said that sagging initially was a sign of sexual availability in the big house.

Funny; I did a very similar post ;ast year (http://www.mindspill.bygbaby.com/2006/06/urban-legend-or-reality.htm) My brotha, we are on the same page!!!

Ha Ha HA ! I am still laughing at "I only go to jails to drop people off, so I certainly dont know for sure". Too funny !

But I agree, I was on my commute to work and heard this older guy tell this younger guy , "you really should pull your pants up, its not a good look". A good look to whom? I mean, I personally dont want to see your pants sagging because 9 times out of 10, your underwear are ugly. At least wear some nice plaids, some polka dots, or something pleasing to the people who are going to be forced to view your behind. However, I dont believe its that serious where we need to pass legislation regulating what people wear. No one is being harmed.

whatever dude. I would say great minds think alike, but I don't want to admit that we agree on sumthin

I don't really like it (sagging), but I am of another generation. My fashion decisions are almost always based on comfort. I can't be comfortable if my movement is impaired.

I am slowly starting to care less. They will pull those pants up when they go on that job interview. At least I hope they will.

oh well, more pants in my size for me.

Its called personality profiling. A trend that starts in the jail yard and then hits the streets is a calling card for those who embrace it. Anyone that wishes to glorify a "ganster style" should be thrown in jail. Let them live out their dream. Shot them in the leg and give them a gold tooth while your at it!
They should be treated like shit because it is apparently of the greatest importance to prove their ignorance. There comes a time where the country needs leaders to ensure our future. Lets not let these loser of society call the shots. Its time to take a stand! Otherwise, we are all fuckin' lost as our culture is made up of MTV jail yard mentality.
