How About a Book Club?

Okay, if you’ve read the post before this one then you know that I took my mom to see, The Family That Preys, yesterday. While we waited for the movie to start, we watched the previews of movies to come. One of the movies to come. One that caught my attention was the new movie starring Queen Latifia, Alisha Keyes and Dakota Fanning. The Secret Life of Bees. My ears immediately perked up when they said that this movie was based on a book and I remember whispering to my mom; “Imma go get that book tomorrow.”

So, here it is tomorrow and what did I do. Well, first up I woke up from a horribly realistic dream, where I murdered a family bully. That was not cool. I literally woke up in tears. Once I got over that, I went and got a hair cut. Yes, I am look very cute today and then went to Border’s Books to see if I could find my book. The Secrete Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd; only fourteen bucks. It is lying right here beside me.

Now, before I open up a page and begin to read it I have to ask….Anybody out there willing to join me in reading this book? I know, I ain’t Oprah, but I have been trying to get other bloggers to start a blog book club. So, since I can’t get anyone else to do it, I figured I’d take a shot at it. So, what do you say? Any takers? I know you good people read, because you are dedicated readers to the world of BLOGS.

I’ve never done the book club thing before, although I really do enjoy reading. That being said, I am not one of those read a book in a day kind of people. I like to make a good book linger on, like good sex. I like to make it last until I can stands it no more. So, I read in stages, during breaks, and such. If I had the money, I’d have wall to wall books in my house, because I love the written word so much. If I can just get a handful of you to join me in enjoying these written words, and maybe discussing them later, I’ll be one happy camper.

-One Man’s Opinion. Peace.

Actually, I finished up that book a few months ago. Took me a year to finish, because I move around a lot and travel a lot for business. So I mostly read it while on a plane.

ANYWAY ~ I absofuckinglutely adored it! And when I found out they were making a movie about it, I jumped for JOY!

So, when you are ready to discuss (in a book-clubby sort of way) I will be available!

While a book club sounds good, I'm not really into books like that. I'll catch the movie though.

I'm in. I will check the library for the book b/c I've reached my 3 buy book limit for the month.

Russian, I'm not sure there are any rules, besides get the book, read the book, talk about the book.

Southern Gal, my dumb ass should have went to the Library, that way I would have a forced deadline to finish the damn thing.

I've already read this (and loved it) - but the next one...I'm in!

Yup - I'd love to join. But you gotta post rules and stuff...what do we do, how do we do it, what do we read, how do we discuss it. Sooo - how are we gonna do it?

I read that book in one afternoon - and YES, it was THAT GOOD!

I for one, am so excited for this movie and I'm thrilled at the cast.

I borrowed the book from my auntie, otherwise I would read it again.

Once you get to discussing the book, I'll chime in.

See...Darius be making me sick....I don't know to organize stuff. I make my older sister do that kind of crap. The only thing I know how to organize is a bar check.....Okay, so lets see....

I guess we need a time frame.....Let's give it about a month. Rules:

1) Get the book.
2) Read the book.
3) Enjoy the book.
4) Finish the book.
5) Talk about the book.

(Yeah, I know, those rules suck! I am open to suggestions.)

I would love to join but finding books here is a bit difficult

Hey One Man I wanted to start a book club too! I was thinking about creating a special blog for it so all can go to that one link to view read and discuss, and have access.

I would love to join. I was thinking about reading the The Purpose Driven Life book. Maybe that can be the next book in club. What do you think?

Either way i'm in!

My book club read it about 8 months ago, they said it was pretty good...but I really wasn't interested. BUT, you do know what is a REEEAAALLLYY good book (and I hope the movie does it justice...which it won't) "Nights in Rodanthe" I read that two summers ago. I left the book at work to have something to do (I was a receptionist then) and dang if I couldn't wait to get to work everyday just to read the book :)

I'm down, but I need some structure pa...how about you just tell us:
1. Cut-off date for book purchase
2. Give the number of chapters that need to be read by a period of time (folks can read more, but we all need to be at a certain point by a certain time)
3. Discuss the chapters read on your blog
4. Blow-out synopsis at the end of the book - by you of course - with comments by your loyal fans

What say you?

One Man’s Opinion said...

Okay, I am hella excited now! Alright, what we know is that everyone who has read it read it quickly, but I know everyone doesn't have time to devote to reading as much as they would like. So, lets get some structure down for Cocoa and Russian.

How about this....Let's have the book purchased or checked out by the end of next week and five chapthers in by the following week.

Naapali said...

since this book is only three feet away from me right now and I just finished reading the book I was reading, I will join you.

so how shall this book club work?

Unknown said...

Bet! Book by next week and five chapters by first week in Oct.

You are officially Oprah-tized!

I'm in... just gotta finish a coupld of others first, but then I'm all over this book!

JayBee said...

i might check it out. after all, one_man has made a request. provide a rough timeline for us to have read certain chapters by or whatnot.

Nice idea, one man. But I'm so hooked on Sudoku and NY Times crosswords that I don't read much anymore. I am currently reading David Sedaris's "When You Are Engulfed in Flames." I recommend it. It's funny, though the title doesn't sound like it would be.

Now you know I'm in law school and briefing cases up the a$$ but when I saw that crappy TP movie, I decided I was going to read the book before the movie came out.

All that to say, I'm in!!

Tafari said...

Read... Fuck that, I am waiting for the movie boo!!!

WAIT - I'm not happy with this structure. I think Cocoa has some great points. Um...e-mail me - darius@dariustwilliams.org.

Let's do this the right way, mkay?
