In Whom Can I Trust?

Why is it that the wants of a few always seem to outweigh the wants of the many? Okay, maybe not always, but it seems like most of the time. Take Hillary Clinton for instance. Many want her ass to drop out of the race for the democratic nominee, but she is continuing to run based on the wants of a few (her and her husband). LOL. No, I’m just kidding. If she wants to continue to run I will not hate on her for that. You never know what might happen; the heifer could grow a penis, sport a ‘fro and come back full force. That’s not what this post is about anyway. I just felt like taking a pot shot at Hilary.

Seriously though, has anyone else besides me, noticed this? How the world seems to bend to the needs of a few crazy folks who know how to orchestrate a letter. Department stores and Christmas cards now read Happy Holiday’s instead of Merry Christmas. What’s up with that? Isn’t Jesus the reason for the season? Prayer was taken out of schools because of the protest of a few. So, instead of allowing the people who want their children to participate in prayer in school, they focus on the few who don’t. Are you telling me that five minutes are prayer is going to convert a child over to Christianity? That’s insanity! Most of them are too busy digging in their booties to even pay attention to want is being said anyway. I say, taint your damn child on your own time.

Now they have minted the new dollar coin and taken out the motto, “In God We Trust”. Plus, I am learning that they are also making post offices around the world take down any posters with this saying on them.

What the hell? I’m not understanding the reasoning behind this stupidity. Did I miss a memo or something? Can someone please tell me why we are taking God out of the equation? Because to me, taking God out is like removing the “c” out e=mc². Not that I ever truly understood that shit completely, but hell, I don’t always understand God either, but I know he has a purpose in my life.

Facts:

Did you know that it was way back on April 22, 1864 that Congress passed the Act that authorized the Mint Director to develop the design for IN GOD WE TRUST to be printed on the two cent coin? It would subsequently be placed on all U.S. Coinage until 1883 when it disappeared from the five cent coin, only to reappear in 1938, when Jefferson’s mug was placed on the nickel. In 1907 the motto was found to be missing from the new design of the double-eagle gold coin, but that was quickly remedied when based on a general demand, Congress ordered it restored and the Act of May 18, 1908 made it mandatory on all coins upon which it had previously appeared. Note: IN GOD WE TRUST was not mandatory on one cent and five cent coins, but could be inscribed on them based on the Secretary or the Mint Director with the Secretary’s approval.
It wasn’t all that long ago, July 30, 1956, that a law was passed by the 84th Congress that approved IN GOD WE TRUST to be the national motto of the United States. A year later that motto would be inscribed on all paper currency (the first time being on October 1, 1957).
And do you even know when the idea of having anything denoting America’s faith was even brought up as an issue? During the Civil War; That’s right’s, because of the deeply rooted “religious sentiment” that existed during this time of war, the Secretary of the Treasury was receiving many appeals from devout people throughout the country, urging the United States recognize the Deity of United Stated coins. ‘Cause you know those southern bastard believed that slave ownership was a God given right. Racist bastards! But the idea of recognizing God was still a good one on both sides.

Anyway, I thought I’d just give you a little background on the damn thing. My point is, why fuck with a good thing? I have always thought we build this country based on one facet of religion or another, so why change that? What is wrong with trusting in God? Hell, if you can’t trust him, who can you trust? You can’t trust the Police (yeah, I said it). You can’t trust the clergy. Hell, you can’t even always trust you own parents. I say you need someone to believe in beside yourself. I choose God, but maybe that’s just me.

In all honesty, it kind of scares me when we start removing God from the equation. We have all bore witness to what has started to happen in our schools since prayer was removed. I don’t know if it is just a coincidence or if God is trying to tell us something. But I, for one, don’t want to find out the hard way. My job is dangerous enough as it is, damn it! I say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Don’t get me wrong. I think some change is good and necessary, but taking the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is neither of the two.
But hell, you know me. That’s just….

-One Man’s Opinion. Peace.
In GOD I will always trust. Everybody else can bite me.

"Render unto Caesar ... " The Treasury now, and in the time of Jesus, was Caesar's not the Church's.

Having traveled and interacted with foreign business people, I think that if removing the phrase furthers international trade, then I am all for it.

And considering all that evil the leaders of this country have engaged in, including the present administration, having "God" on the money smacks of moral hypocrisy on the part of our politicians and Federal Reserve chairmen.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Great post, one man. My pastor has dealt with this topic before, and your post could rival his sermon *hey, you might even consider preaching! :-)* You're right... America has kicked God out... guess they took off the motto cos they DON'T trust in Him no more...

Mizrepresent said...

Wow, i didn't notice that...but you know what they can remove it from the rafters, God still has a way of showing this world he's in control. I guess America just don't think it can happen to them, cyclones, earthquakes, typhoons...

i'm still trusting God!

Anonymous said...

No offense to you all, but how has "America kicked out God"? While that Fox News propaganda might fil pews and get Bill O'Reilly some viewers at Xmas time, the fact is that most people in this country claim to be protestant or Catholic. So, if anybody is kicking out God, it is Christians themselves (starting with The Christian-in-Chief, George Bush)!

As a student in law, I think Curious is dead on. The government's job is to be neutral. One man, yes, you are one of the "peoples"; but so are Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Followers of Traditional African Religions, Native Americans, Buddhists, Agnostics and Atheists. Now tell me you wouldn't be mad if they started making U.S. coins that said, "Vishnu (among Others) is Lord,""Allah is Great," "Mother Africa," "Grandfather Watches Over Our Land," or "Trust in Nothing but Yourself"?

But in the end, it's all moot.

People can talk about their religion, or lack of it, all they want but in the end all their bill collectors want is legal tender, not copies of The Watchtower, The Origin of the Species, or religious tracts. As I heard Dick Gregory tell some black Muslims and Hebrews once, "You pray to the East all you want, but you pay your rent in the West!"

Dave Van Buren said...

I think when people say "God" everyone automatically thinks Christan or catholic. It was more the Atheist folks who protested the whole motto and got everyone started. I never had a problem with it, it's not like it says "In Jesus we Trust" or "In Allah we Trust". Whoever your God is I'm sure you trust in them. And if you don't believe in God them just don't use the money.

Right on Homer.

With all this diasters like cyclones, earthquakes, tornadoes, wild fires, I'm putting my trust in God whether or not it's on my money.

One Man’s Opinion said...

Well, Mark, like Homer said. Everyone believes in a different God. My God, the Great I Am, (no, not Popeye), just happens to go by God alone. Even he was aware of other gods, that is why in one of the ten commandments he says, "Thy shall have no other god before me." That being said, if I was of whatever faith I would just think the money was talking about my God to begin with. It's no different when I read books. I normally like the think of the man character as black until a description tells me otherwise. So the fact is that Congress did in did pass an act that made IN GOD WE TRUST an official motto, regards of what anyone says, so why poop on it now?

John Barleycorn said...

Separation of church and state, man.

Seeing "God" on my dollar bill doesn't offend me, so whatever to this, really. But removing prayer from public schools was a good idea. You wanna send your kid to a God-driven school? Send your fucking kid to a God-driven school! Otherwise keep your hokey magical-reality shit outta my poor-ass public school kid's head.

But none of this matters 'cause I'm gay and I don't like children.

Hmmm...let's see. Prayer out of school, next thing you know, students are getting mowed down. I don't care who tries debating it, that's my opinion.

Go on let them take Him off. I know where MY Help comes from.

Okay so you're a cop who doesn't beleive in the Constitution, what's new?

But to answer your larger question, "Why is it that the wants of a few always seem to outweigh the wants of the many?" We live in a republic with laws that are designed to protect the rights of minorities from the tyrannies of the majority.

Sure, we all have rights and one of those rights is the right to be left alone. So you can praise your Jesus this, or give homage to Buddah that, or even deny that there is a greater force, but don't force me to support your beliefs with my money.

Also, prayer in school. Is there some reason that you religious types can't take 10 minutes in the morning and do that at home without going to school and bringing down the whole system.

Anyway, no one is telling anyone not to trust in God if that is what they want, but if you don't want to use any of those coins or dollar bills that don't have that motto, please please feel free to send them my way.

JayBee said...

Wow, this topic really struck a nerve! Almost feel like wheeling Rodney King into the blog, so he can step to the microphone and bring peace on the subject of God and money.

"Can't we all just get a loan?!?"

I think Curious is on to something, though. If preachers care about my soul, then why should they ask ME for cash on Sunday? If the name of God is on the dough, they should be giving ME the cash, that why I'll remember to keep God in my thoughts ... and wallet (LOL)!

Jennifer Abel said...

Nope, Curious. That doesn't do it for me at all. Not at all.

The Constitution of the United States of America "doesn't do it for you?" This may help explain why more and more law-abiding citizens neither trust nor respect the police.

John, John, John, I don't believe that you don't like children for a moment, but you know yourself better than me.
Jennifer the reason what Curious said doesn't do it for me is because Amendments have been past to put that motto onto both paper and coin currency. I'm not easily offended, but I am offended by the little attack on police, by both you and Curious. I and the majority of police I know follow the letter of the law to the "t", which means that it is taught to me and we have updates once a year on what we can and can not do as police. They drill it into us every persons constitional rights and what we can and can not do in the eyes of the constitution. Please don't judge me, as an officer or as a black man, because of the actions of a few.
However, I'm gonna let that little nippited remarks pass, but not really, because although this blog is all about my opinion, it is not all about me. However, I do ask that you don't make blanket statements about a career that I take much pride in unless you have something to back that *EXPlETIVE*, up with! (The expletive was shit, for those of you who were wondering).
Sorry, but the whole cop hate thing does get old after a while.

Yall can yell Seperation of Church and State all day long, but that is why I put in the historical background of the 'damn thing', to show that it wasn't an issue then. So don't try to flip the script on me, because I am a cop, when it was the law makers in CONGRESS that put the shit on paper in the first place.
Let's keep our perspective and not talk about law enforcement unless you know what the fuck you are talking about. **Please and Thank you**

Moving right along, Curious, your last statement; "if you don't want to use any of those coins or dollar bills that don't have that motto, please please feel free to send them my way." I can turn it around and say if you don't want to use any of those coins or dollars with the motto on it feel free to send them my way, and I think I'd come out with a head of the game.
However, for those of you who don't know, let me tell it on the mountain top fo' ya. My faith does not get folded away into the confines of my wallet, nor does it jingle in my pants pockets. I try to wear it proudly in the way that I carry myself around others (bad words in this blog excluded), because I know we are judged more so by our action, other than our words.
Anyway, this post was not really meant to be about religion,it was suppose to ask the question about "when did minority rule" take effect. The samples that I made note of just happened to be drenched in religion, apparently. LOL.
Okay, bring on the next attack. I'm hot and ready!

Curious said...

One Man, I don't want to belabor my point, but this post is much better than the *EXPLETIVE* I've written.

I follow your argument and find it valid except for the fact that the Bill of Rights supercede all laws, acts, rules, regulations or customs.

Also I have no intention of putting you down or any other memebr of your profession. I just wanted to point out the irony of a policeman saying that the Constitution did not matter. A Constitution that has 9 men and women struggle daily to interpret to determine if other laws or actions are legal. A Constituion that prevents the despotism of the many over the few.

Oh and the money thing, as long as it's legal tender and I can take it to the bank, I'll take anything listed with God or not, even if it's silver certificates from the 1920s or gold dubloons from a spanish galleon. So I think I'd make out better. I'm not fussy.

Bedlam said...

Question ---> Will you refuse to use the new dollars because it does not have IN GOD WE TRUST?

Your Faith in GOD should be embedded in you, not a dollar or any GRAVEN IMAGE, you should thank GOD that you have earned the money and can spend it on items you like. The dollar is a federal reserve note used to make payments (This Note Is Legal Tender For All Debts Public and Private). Heres a suggestion, take all your dollars (moneyt) to church and place them on the alter and let the preachers bless them, that way you will know your money has the approval of GOD.

And back then, "all men are created equal" applied to white people only; the rights and freedoms of anyone else weren't "an issue" either. But I would (metaphorically) spit on anyone who says that we should all go back to the good old days when the Constitution was interpreted only in a way to make the majority feel good, and to hell with everyone else.

i think they took God out of the equation a lonnng time ago. i always wonder how could the truth of the matter "be" God is the creator of all living things, the light, yet the world is built and maintained on just about every principle opposite of the light. if that is so - then what does that really say about the goverment?

some of this can be contributed to the forthcoming new world order i suppose.

The one dollar bill AND subsequently released one dollar coins feature In God We Trust as they always have.
The dollar will retain the In God We Trust where it now is and the coin will feature the saying on the edge. When GOD created the HEAVENS and THE EARTH I don't think it was meant for the PURPOSE of having AD SPACE on the Dollar Bill.

Bottom line, if "IN GOD WE TRUST" is on U.S. currency or not, it will still spend anywhere and everywhere around the World. And even if you make the argument that it shouldn't be an issue if it is or not, the CONCEPT OF AMERICA at its very foundation demands that "IN GOD WE TRUST NOT" NOT BE ON THE DOLLAR BILL.

The issue with RELIGION (at the core of most of the Blog posting) being an issue in PUBLIC and GOVERNMENT is that those that are in the majority (or think they are) make this argument and are most offended when NON-CHRISTIANS remind them that the RELIGIOUS ARROGANCE to the subtle infusing of Religion is in direct violation to the principles of the United States as per its CONSTITUTION.

The reason why we we say Happy Holidays, have No Pray in PUBLIC schools, IN GOD WE TRUST off the Dollar Bill, etc. is because in "Common SENSE" arguments and in the founding U.S. Documents of the Republics, the argument to remove it is VERY CLEAR.

Just because you remove all of these VIOLATIONS to the common citizenship of America, the removal shouldn't, and has been proven, don't effect Spirituality, its people affect their on Spirituality. Then again MONEY is noted being the ROOT OF ALL EVIL and is that is the case, WHY HAVE GOD'S NAME ON IT ???

Sorry, but the whole cop hate thing does get old after a while.

Not at all, bro. Last week I participated in "Take Your Cop to Work Day." He had fun with all the other cops that my co-workers brought to work, and there were snacks and balloons for all the cops. After that, they got to squeeze off some rounds in the Perp Shooting Range. At the end of the day, I drove him home, as he fell asleep in the back of the car with his cotton candy in one hand and his .357 in the other. I thought, "Well, SOMEONE'S gonna sleep well tonight!"

(I'm sorry One Man. Been watching too much Family Guy, lately)

Nothing but peace to my homies in blue, as they keep perps away from my pad!

I'm done with the subject, as I pretty much agree with Curious's position. I also agree with what Mad Hottie, er, Hatter said ...

And no, Shazza, it says the LOVE of money, not money itself. Unfortunately, that anti-money bullsh**t has been drummed into the heads of blacks by religious jacklegs for too long, creating a subconscious resistance to doing for self among black Americans compared to other minorities, even brothers and sisters from the Caribbean (Black West Indians, like Asians tend to have higher incomes than continental-born blacks).

It's all the devil, that's what he want's. No matter what happens, Christ will prevail. Like these Warren Jeffs folks, talking about how they are "Good Christians"...I'm sorry but there is NO John Smith, or Angel Maronie in MY bible so please stop! I saw a book in the book store the other day on display that said "Religion": How God Poisions Everything, or somthing to that nature, I almost lost my sh**! And for mark d. aster...I don't think ANYbody would decline the, used to be, "Almighty Dollar" because it says "In God We Trust"...almost everyone who is not Atheist, or whatever, believes in "GOD" in some form or another, that is the most basic and most generic thing people have in common...but it is 'how' you are getting to God that makes the difference...are you trying to get to him through your the imaginary telephone on the bottom of your shoe,a crystal you where around your neck or through Christ Jesus? There is only one right answer. Money will go'round no matter WHAT it says.

Actually it is noted that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

I am a strong Christian and I am of the persuasion (my personal opinion) that all of the other religions believe in God the CREATOR; they just simply call him other names and they believe that he comes from different orgins.
So I don't see anything wrong with the statement and the printing of In God we Trust, be it on a bill or a coin and most importantly hopefully in your hearts.

And can I just say, damn it, that I don't read my money, except to the dollar amount on the damn stuff. It's a great book, and Christopher Hitchens is a great writer. I also recommend "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. Being a scientific and mathematically minded "unchurched" brutha, I gave up on God, the Tooth Fairy, and Santa Claus a long time ago (although I gladly, and hypocritically accept paid Christmas time off from all my employers - LOL).

I see no reason to believe in a God, whether "His" name is on my money or unwashed drawers (as in the case of Mormons), especially when said God didn't do jack for 400 years to prevent the African Slavery holocaust, Jim Crow, Segregation, or AIDS in Africa. With a God like that, who needs black enemies?

So, I could care less who's name is on my money, Vertigo, (although it would be funny and more truthful if American currency read "Satan is Our Master") as I know no one's name is real or counts other than the Secretary of the Treasury.

You know, there was a time when GOD told Western Europe that it was a divine cause to make Africans and Native Americans slaves due to "Trust". There was a time when GOD told Americans that Women couldn't own Land or Vote, wear Pants and or have Rights as placed by GOD's "Trust". There was a time by GOD's "Trust" that anyone Non-Christian was considered savage as by "Trust" and could not be associated with divine people ... Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Shintoist, Muslims,Buddhist etc. In GOD's "Trust" we know what would happen if a Black Man even looked at a White Woman or had a sense of being intelligent. It wasn't so long ago by GOD's "Trust" it was America's Right to invade a sovereign Nation.

My point is, a GOVERNMENT cannot take away a person's Spirituality nor its Religion. It can manipulate the conditions by which it is practiced (which America is very good at doing) but Religion is greater than any one Nation, including the U.S. of A.

Yes, Government can make it difficult to worship openly and publicly but the essences of destroying religion fundamentally, believing that it can affect a person's Higher Power is false, laughable and shares the skewed vision of Hate Mongers.

The issue here is that THOSE that rattle the chains the loudest do more to complain about the shape of the table than sitting down and RESPECTING the purpose of the table. You Can't Force People To Reject Their Faith In Order To Be, Exist And Or Live As An American. Nor does GOD select, choose, consider, and make 1 single Nation or even People the favorite in the UNIVERSE. This is an ARROGANCE infused into Religion (and then Government) by People whom are insecure about their place in the World.

If I pray at home, I shouldn't be forced (and as a child were were all forced either directly or indirectly) to Pray before class. If your culture is that to need Money as being dirty and you print "GOD" on it .. their IS a contradiction pre-established by Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths. If you look at the TRUE origin of Christmas and not the contemporary existence of it, All Three Top Monotheistic Faiths do well to substitute Happy Holidays for Merry Christmas.

I, like mark d. aster, dropped god into the dust bin of disbelief, right on top of Santa Claus and the Easter bunny, when I was a child. The whole concept of a supernatural being hovering over us directing all the affairs of the earth, from creation to present day activities is just too bizarre. If other people want to believe in it and continue to fight over which version is the correct one, FINE! Knock yourselves out. But leave me alone. Do not attempt to convert me. Do not subject me to public prayer. Do not make the inane assumption that, since I don't believe in god, that means I must worship Satan! Believe it or not, I have been confronted with that idiocy more than once. Do not make me include the words "under god" when I pledge allegiance to my country. Do not legislate morality. I don't give a damn about what you put on or don't put on our coins and currency, as long as it's still spendable. I don't spend much time reading money. I could go on and on, but I won't.

And One Man, I want to thank you for being a cop. I have great respect for the police. It takes a lot of courage and dedication to put your life on the line, every single day, in order to make rest of us feel safe. Every time I see a cop on the beat, I stop and thank him.

I think the main thing is (as was stated) that people tend to be arrogant about religion. It's easy to forget that this country was formed in an escape from religious persecution and it's not safe to assume that the person sitting next to you shares your religious beliefs. History teaches us that the slaves were robbed of their true religious beliefs and converted to Christianity- who are we to expect the same of others as a price to live in our country? It's hypocritical. It really used to offend me when as I walked along minding my own business someone I did not know would invite me to their church. It offended me to the point of checking said person. I go to a Southern Baptist University, and I knew going in what I was getting myself into, but would I want my daughter to attend a christiam school? Big fat "NO." We can't assume that just because a school has prayer, that the person leading it is not a religious zealot that would scare the day lights out of our children with the fire and brimstone bit. Let's not forget that the Ku Klux Klan were "good God-fearing Christians." The same could be said of these religious cults that are getting so much air time as of late. Christianity has so many different facets and offsets you really have no idea what you're getting.
As far as the money goes, I feel that we have to make changes to accomodate our changing society. If your faith is strong, it really doesn't matter what it says on the money, it really doesn't matter that we don't have group prayer in schools; a person with strong faith is unaffected by these things. Your relationship with God or whatever you call your higher power is a personal thing that should remain true as long as you and God know what is in your heart.

Hey bro!

I just wanted to let you know I love your blog.. and I loved this post as well!

Don't look weird when you see more and more of this stuff happening every day.. it's all written down in the bible.. people will absolutely turn away from God..

Here in Holland it's even worse.. I mean, I'm sure you know about holland? We're leading in every sin in the book.. gay marriage, abortions, euthenasia, prostitution, drugs.. yep, that's holland.. ;)

Anyway.. as I said, I just wanted to let you know I dig your blog.. keep up the good work!

greetings from holland!

So did I miss that book in the Bible, where God sent a Prophet (Jan van Moses?) to Holland to smite them with a curse?
